Environmental Impacts and Improvements

  • Existing wetlands will be impacted as I-94 is realigned for the new I-94/Ecorse Road Interchange. To mitigate these impacts, new offsite wetlands will be constructed south of the project.

  • Existing floodplains ⓘFloodplains are areas of low-lying ground adjacent to rivers that is subject to flooding after rainstorms or other highwater events. and streams will be impacted by roadway reconstruction and culverts ⓘCulverts are tunnels that carry streams or open drains under a roadway replacements. Floodplain storage ⓘFlood storage areas are places that stores water to reduce the impact of flooding on downstream areas. These areas can be natural, such as wetlands, or man-made. will not be reduced. Proposed culverts ⓘCulverts are tunnels that carry streams or open drains under a roadway carrying streams under the roadway will be larger than the existing ones.
  • Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) ⓘ Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are widely used, long lasting chemicals, components of which break down very slowly over time. PFAS are found in water, air, fish, and soil at locations across the nation and the globe. contamination was investigated and MDOT is working with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) to mitigate any concerns.
  • Trees will be replaced throughout the project area.
