What is the RESTORE 94 Project? Where is it located?
Restore 94 will repair 12.7 miles of the I-94 freeway from east of I-275 to west of Michigan Avenue in Romulus, Taylor, Allen Park, Dearborn Heights, Melvindale, and Dearborn.
The roadway doesn’t look that bad in this area. Why is this project being done and what improvements will be made?
The project will improve the road, extend its life and enhance traffic flow. For a list of improvements and why MDOT is making them, see the Project Details page.
What is happening on the project now?
Project design is taking place at this time.
When will construction take place?
Construction will take place from early 2026 to mid-2029.
How will traffic be managed during construction?
Two lanes of traffic in each direction will be maintained on I-94, interrupted only by occasional placement of temporary concrete barriers for new phases of construction. For additional details, see the Maintenance of Traffic page.
Will access to the airport remain open?
Access to the airport will be maintained throughout construction.
Will access be maintained to Gate 10 at the Ford Rouge Plant (I-94/Schaefer Road Interchange?)
Yes, access to Gate 10 will be maintained at all times via the ramp or a detour.
Will there be any environmental impacts?

How will the project be funded and what will it cost?
The project has both federal and state funding, with federal funding being the largest source. Construction cost is currently estimated to be $353 million.
